World Suicide Prevention Day 2026

World Suicide Prevention Day 2026

Today marks the final year of the WHO’s three year theme:

Changing the Narrative on Suicide – Start the Conversation.

This message is deeply personal for me, some of my friends, and former colleagues, as last year we experienced the devastating and sudden loss of a colleague who took his own life. It wasn’t something any of us saw coming. At work, we had strong wellbeing support in place, multiple Mental Health First Aiders, empathetic HR and leadership teams, and, as a whole, a wonderful workplace team, with regular check ins, and a culture that genuinely encouraged people to speak up. But this was something hidden in a way none of us could have known.

It showed us that even when workplaces do a lot, we still need more openness, more courage to speak out, and more courage to check in with one another.

As a Mental Health First Aider myself, I try every day to notice when someone might be struggling and to offer support in a way that feels human and safe. But sometimes people mask their pain. Sometimes you won’t see it, and that’s why creating environments of trust and compassion matters so much.

This year’s call to action says it clearly: Start the conversation!

Now workplaces have an additional tool to support this: BS 30480 - Suicide and the Workplace, the first national workplace suicide prevention standard. It provides guidance for organisations to build safer cultures, clearer processes, and more confident responses when someone may be at risk.

If you’d like to read or download the standard, you can do so here: https://lnkd.in/exKyvrH3

There is also a huge amount of support and guidance available from @IASPinfo Please check out their website and downloadable resources, they are leading the global conversation on suicide prevention and awareness. Here is the link: https://www.iasp.info/

In our teams, communities, and workplaces, we can all help reduce stigma and make it easier for people to say, “I’m not okay.”

Check in with people. Ask how they are....... genuinely. Not the polite version.

Not the rushed version. Real care makes a difference. Please don't ignore them!

And if you’re struggling yourself, please know that asking for help is not a burden. It’s brave.

At Starlit People, wellbeing isn’t a buzzword. It’s a responsibility.

Today is a reminder that compassion, openness, and honest conversations save lives.

Let’s keep changing the narrative together!
