Menopause Awareness Month: Workplace Adjustments That Actually Help

Menopause, perimenopause, and post menopause can affect people in completely different ways, there’s no single “typical” experience. Symptoms can range from hot flushes, brain fog, sleep disruption and anxiety, to joint pain, migraines, memory lapses, skin changes, and overwhelming fatigue. Some people experience only a few symptoms; others face dozens. And for many, it can be life‑altering.

That’s why workplaces cannot assume what someone needs, or rely on guesswork or stereotypes. The most supportive thing an employer can do is create space for a calm, confidential wellbeing conversation. This is where the employee can explain what they’re experiencing, what’s impacting them at work, and what adjustments might help.

Once the employee has shared their needs, the workplace can put tailored adjustments in place, things like flexible start times, access to cooler working areas, reduced triggers for symptoms, quiet spaces, adjusted uniform requirements, or temporary changes to duties. These don’t have to be complicated, but they do need to be personalised.

These conversations can be held with:

  • their line manager,

  • HR,

  • or a trained Menopause Champion if your organisation has one.

And this is where I come in. As a trained Menopause Champion, I support organisations in having these conversations well, with confidence, sensitivity and clarity. I help managers understand symptoms, workplace impacts, and how to put meaningful adjustments in place that genuinely support their employees.

If your workplace doesn’t yet have trained Menopause Champions, it’s worth considering. The Online Menopause Centre provides excellent training for managers, supervisors, directors and champions, giving them the knowledge and tools to support employees compassionately and effectively.

Menopause support isn’t about ticking a box. It’s about listening, understanding, and working together to make sure employees feel safe, respected and able to thrive at work, whatever stage of life they’re in.
