Bereavement Leave Changes: What Employers Need to Know

Bereavement affects everyone differently, but one thing is certain, when someone experiences a significant loss, work is often the last thing on their mind.

That's why changes to bereavement leave are on the way. From April 2027, employees will gain a new day one right to statutory bereavement leave following the loss of certain close family members, with the changes also covering pregnancy loss before 24 weeks.

For many employers, offering compassionate leave is already standard practice. However, the new legislation recognises that not all employees currently have the same protections and that people shouldn't have to worry about work, pay or job security while navigating grief.

While the changes aren't in force yet, now is a good opportunity to review your policies, ensure managers are confident handling bereavement conversations, and consider whether the support you offer reflects the needs of your workforce.

At its heart, this isn't just about legal compliance. It's about recognising that people are human, and supporting employees through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
